Challenge Info

What is this?

Outofthebook is an early-stage narrative experiment. We believe stories don't need to be linear, fixed, or finished.

We're starting with people β€” not software.

You're not just writing a story. You're co-creating a new form of narrative. You'll have direct influence on the design of the tool we're building.

What you get:

  • πŸ’Έ $100 for a selected story
  • πŸ§ͺ Chance to test a new narrative format
  • 🧠 Direct influence on tool design
  • 🏷️ Credit as early author / pilot contributor
  • πŸ“š Possibility of your story becoming the first "living book"

What Makes a Living Story?

A living story is more than just a narrative with multiple endings. It's a story that remembers, adapts, and responds to the reader's journey.

Think about:

  • Decisions that matter: Choices that genuinely change the story's direction
  • Consequences: Actions that ripple through the narrative
  • Memory: A story that remembers what the reader has done
  • Multiple perspectives: Different viewpoints that reveal new truths
  • Emergent narratives: Stories that unfold differently each time

Your story doesn't need to be perfect. It needs to be exploratory. We're discovering together what interactive narrative can become.

Why This Matters

The Problem with Traditional Stories

Books, movies, and traditional narratives follow a single path. Every reader experiences the same journey, makes none of the choices, and watches from the outside.

But what if stories could be different?

What We're Building

Outofthebook is exploring a new form of narrative where:

  • Readers become participants, not observers
  • Choices create unique, personal experiences
  • Stories adapt and remember your journey
  • Multiple readings reveal different truths
  • The narrative is alive, not fixed

Your Role

As an early writer, you're not just submitting a story. You're helping define what interactive narrative can become. Your feedback, your process, your experiments β€” all of it shapes the platform we're building.

This is your chance to be part of something genuinely new in storytelling.

Submission Format

How to Structure Your Story

Since we don't have a platform yet, you can structure your branching narrative however makes sense to you. Here are some approaches that work:

πŸ“„ Flowchart Style

Create a visual map showing how choices branch and reconnect. Label each node/scene clearly.

πŸ“ Numbered Sections

Write sections numbered like "1, 2a, 2b, 3a, 3b, 3c" showing different paths readers can take.

πŸ“‹ Screenplay Format

Use a script format with clear choice points marked as "CHOICE:" followed by options.

πŸ—ΊοΈ Your Own Method

Invent your own format! Part of this experiment is discovering what works.

Tips for Success

  • Start small β€” 3-5 major choice points is enough
  • Make choices meaningful, not arbitrary
  • Think about consequences that ripple forward
  • Don't worry about perfection β€” this is experimental
  • Include notes about your process and thinking
